What to Prepare Before a First Consultation

A first consultation about steel server housings usually goes one of two ways. Either the client arrives with a clear set of drawings and load requirements, or they arrive with a vague sense that their current racks are not working and a hope that someone will sort it out. Both are fine, but the second path takes longer and costs more in revision cycles. This post covers what actually helps us move faster when you sit down with our engineering team.

The most useful thing you can bring is a floor plan of the room where the enclosures will sit. It does not need to be architectural-grade. A hand sketch with dimensions, door swing directions, and ceiling height is enough to start. What matters is that we can see where the racks will go relative to cooling units, cable trays, and service access points. Without that context, we are guessing at airflow paths and maintenance clearance, and those guesses tend to come back as change orders later.

Second on the list is a list of the hardware that will live inside the enclosures. We are not asking for serial numbers or vendor documentation. We need the physical footprint of each unit, its depth, its mounting style, and its heat output if you have that figure. A 42U rack filled with shallow network switches behaves differently from one holding deep storage servers with high-density power supplies. The enclosure depth, rail spacing, and ventilation layout all depend on that distinction.

Third, think about how the enclosure will be accessed over its lifetime. Who opens the doors, how often, and with what tools? A data center floor with badge-controlled access and a dedicated maintenance team can use a simpler locking mechanism than a telecom hut in a remote area where a technician visits twice a year. If you have security requirements from a client or a compliance standard, bring those documents. They change the lock spec, the door construction, and sometimes the steel gauge.

Finally, bring your constraints. Weight limits for the floor, width restrictions for doorways and elevators, and any preference about how the enclosure is delivered and assembled on site. A fully welded cabinet is stronger, but it will not fit through a standard doorframe. A bolted frame ships flat and assembles in the room, but it has more joints and a slightly different structural profile. Knowing which constraint matters most helps us recommend the right build from the start.

The conversation will be more productive than a written brief because we can ask the questions that your situation raises. The goal is to leave with a clear specification, a realistic timeline, and a build approach that matches the room you actually have.
